49ers have discussed trading for Aqib Talib [report]

At this point it’s no secret that the 49ers need to acquire a cornerback, or two, this offseason.

In addition to the possibility of selecting one with the ninth overall pick, the 49ers are reportedly kicking the tires on a number of free agents, and even a few players from other teams.

One of those is reportedly five-time Pro Bowl corner Aqib Talib, who the 49ers have discussed trading for according to Dianna Russini of ESPN. The deal between San Francisco and Denver doesn’t look like it’s going to get done, however, and that Talib would prefer to be released and sign with the New England Patriots.

Following the report, Talib responded via Twitter.

Talib, 32, is still considered one of the best corners in the league despite being a little long in the tooth. In addition to being selected to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl, Pro Football Focus ranked Talib as the 15th best corner in the NFL last season. Talib is currently under contract through 2019, is owed $11 million next year, and $8 million in 2019. His contract is no longer guaranteed, however, and the Broncos are reportedly likely to cut his salary if they cannot trade him this offseason.

Talib has made himself an enemy in certain parts of the Bay Area, and twice snatching Raiders receiver Michael Crabtree’s chain in consecutive seasons, leading to a fight in last year’s matchup.
