Weston Richburg shares what influenced his decision to sign with 49ers

New 49ers center Weston Richburg joined Fitz & Brooks on Thursday afternoon and talked about the excitement that awaits him next season after signing a five-year deal with San Francisco on Tuesday.

“That’s kind of the milestone is making it to that second contract,” Richburg said. “And just to be here is a blessing to be with this organization is fantastic. I’m just looking forward to be a small part of how good this place can be.”

Richburg’s deal is reportedly worth $47.5 million and $16.5 million guaranteed. Formerly a second-round pick by the New York Giants in the 2014 NFL Draft, Richburg started at left guard during his rookie season, but has been starting at center the last three seasons.

Before a concussion limited Richburg to only four games last season, the 26-year-old only missed two starts from 2014-2016. Although he’s capable of playing guard, Richburg will likely stay at center since the 49ers traded Daniel Kilgore to the Miami Dolphins on Thursday morning.

“I was able to see what the 49ers were doing from a distance and see the excitement that came along with Jimmy coming in and winning those games at the end,” Richburg said. “Then, during this period, I became aware that the possibility would arise for me to play here and the fact that we’ve been able to make this happen and I’ve been able to join this team is something I’m really excited about.”
