Former Eagles defensive back to visit 49ers on Wednesday [report]

The San Francisco 49ers began filling their need for defensive backs when they signed Richard Sherman, but it appears as if they aren’t done addressing that position. The 49ers are scheduled to host free agent defensive back Jaylen Watkins, formerly of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, on Wednesday, according to Mark Garafolo of NFL Network.

What the 49ers lack in experience at defensive back, they make up for in the promise of rookie Ahkello Witherspoon; who made 28 tackles, four assists, and two interceptions in 12 games last season.

Watkins was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Eagles, but was cut after his rookie season. He started 2015 on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, but eventually returned to the Eagles later in the year.

In 2016, he appeared in every game with four starts for the Eagles, making a career-high 22 tackles and eight assists.

Last season, Watkins played in 12 games and saw three snaps on defense and 17 on special teams during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.
