UPDATE: Madison Bumgarner has a fractured hand. He is set to have surgery tomorrow to insert pins in his fractured pinky knuckle. He will have those pins removed in 4-6 weeks, and his time on the DL is not expected to be short. He told reporters he expects to pitch before the All-Star break

Original story below.

Spring training is too long.

Less than a week before Opening Day, Madison Bumgarner was forced to exit Friday’s exhibition against Kansas City, after taking a hard comebacker off his throwing hand. Bumgarner reportedly did not waive off the trainer and exited the game immediately.

This comes just a day after Bruce Bochy announced that starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija would begin the season on the disabled list with a pectoral strain.

Bumgarner, 28, missed over three months last season after sustaining a Grade 2 strain of the AC joint in his shoulder in a dirt biking accident on April 21. Bumgarner has been solid in spring training up to this point, posting a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings pitched while striking out 27 in five starts.
