On Wednesday night, the 49ers announced the signing of linebacker Korey Toomer to a one-year deal.

The free agent spent last year on the Los Angeles Chargers and posted 46 tackles, one sack, one interception, two forced fumbles, and three passes defended.

Toomer was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He has bounced around to several teams in his professional career, including the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers.

“We’re excited to add a talented player like Korey to our defensive unit,” general manager John Lynch said. “Korey is a good fit for the ‘stack linebacker’ position in our scheme and he provides our team another good football player with plenty of NFL experience in similar systems.”

The 29-year-old played collegiately at the University of Idaho, where he was named team MVP.

Although the 49ers have Reuben Foster and Malcom Smith to carry them through the season, Toomer is a depth piece for the team pending any injuries.
