Kerr says Curry feeling no pain, but “not going to play any time soon”

Sunday morning the Golden State Warriors will try to close out the San Antonio Spurs with a first round sweep in Texas, but if they do it seems that they’ll be playing a significant portion of their second round series without MVP point guard Stephen Curry.

Before Game 4, Steve Kerr met with reporters where he said Curry will not be suiting up for the Warriors any time soon.

The head coach of the Warriors did give a bit of good news on Curry, saying that he no longer feels pain in his left knee following the Grade 2 MCL sprain he suffered when big man JaVale McGee fell on it in late March.

On Friday, the Warriors released a statement that said Curry would begin to participate in modified team practices after making consistent functional progress with that left knee. The team added doctors will re-evaluate Curry’s injury on April 27.

All this news about Curry’s injury coming out of the Warriors camp has to be taken with a grain of salt. Each team is required by the NBA to disclose injury news, but you have to be aware of the fact that there might be a competitive advantage for the Warriors to muddy up the return date for their star guard. The longer the Spurs (or, barring catastrophic failure the Pelicans) are in the dark about Curry’s return, the better.

After sweeping the Portland Trial Blazers, the red-hot Pelicans await the winner of the Spurs/Warriors series. If the Warriors take care of business on Sunday, the two teams could play as soon as Saturday, April 28.

Golden State took care of New Orleans in the two teams’ first three meetings of the year, but the Pelicans beat a Curry-less Warriors team in the 80th game of the regular season.
