Giants place Williamson, Panik on DL, recall Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO — Before the start of their doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, the San Francisco Giants learned they’ll be without both Joe Panik and Mac Williamson for at least a week.

Panik sprained his left thumb during a pickoff attempt late in Friday’s 6-4 victory, which placed him on the 10-day disabled list. He’d been batting .267 with three home runs.

“He did have an MRI and is going to meet with the doctors,” Bruce Bochy said. “I’ll be able to give you a little when they let us know what’s going on, but what we do know is it’s at the point where he can’t play for at least the next 10 days. That’s why he was placed on the disabled list.”

Shortly after Yasiel Puig doubled in a run in the fourth inning, Derek Holland whirled around and attempted to pick him off at second base. Puig scrambled back to avoid the tag.

Although Panik finished the game and hit a sacrifice fly in his next at-bat, Bochy wasn’t fully confident his second baseman will be ready to return after 10 days.

“He got through it, but this morning it was really sore,” Bochy said. “So we sent him in to get an MRI and he wasn’t available today. It looks like it’s going to be at least 10 days.”

As for Williamson, he’s headed for the seven-day concussion disabled list after missing the last two games following his crash in foul territory on April 24. A sprinting attempt to catch a foul ball off the bat of Bryce Harper led to him stumbling over a bullpen mound and crashing into the wall.

“There was a test last night that he had to retake this morning,” Bochy said. “After taking that test, it was determined that he had to be placed on the concussion disabled list.”

Although Bochy added that Williamson, “felt fine yesterday, zero symptoms,” the outfield did experience lightheadedness this morning after taking a test.

“He’s been placed not the disabled list, concussion disabled list,” Bochy said. “Slater will stay activate. I can’t tell you how long, but we’re hoping it just seven days.”

In their place, Austin Slater, who was called up yesterday to take over for the injured Josh Osich, will remain on the active roster while Alen Hanson will join the Giants from Triple-A Sacramento.

Slater made a pinch-hit appearance in Friday’s game and struck out, but was batting .358 with a home run and eight doubles at Triple-A Sacramento. Similarly, Hanson was batting .403 with three home runs and five doubles at Triple-A before being called up.
