Bochy: Panik ‘may need surgery’ on sprained thumb, getting second opinion

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants wrapped up their doubleheader with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday and received bad news regarding second baseman Joe Panik. Although nothing is certain, Bruce Bochy said there’s a strong possibility that Panik will need to undergo surgery after hitting the disabled list with a sprained left thumb.

“He may need surgery,” Bochy said on Saturday. “So he’s getting another opinion and we’ll know which way to go with him, but it looks like he’ll be out for a while.”

As Derek Holland attempted to pick off Yasiel Puig during Friday’s 6-4 victory, Panik received the throw and sprained his left thumb on the attempted putout.

Though Panik remained in the game and hit a key sacrifice fly in his next at-bat, it was announced on Saturday that he’d be heading to the 10-day disabled list. Bochy said on Sunday that Panik will travel to Los Angeles for a second opinion, after which they’ll determine whether he’ll proceed with a rehabilitation process or have to undergo surgery.

“He’s a going to get his second opinion and there’s a good chance he’s headed for surgery,” Bochy said. “We’ll get more once he has his second opinion.”
