Klay Thompson gives full update on Game 1 knee injury

OAKLAND – It was only six minutes into Game 1 of the NBA Finals that it looked like we might have witnessed a series-changing play.

Early in the first quarter the Golden State Warriors were on the fast break when Stephen Curry passed the ball ahead to Klay Thompson streaking down the left side of the court. As Thompson turned and caught the ball, Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith slipped as he tried to get in front of Thompson, rolling into his legs.

Thompson immediately fell to the floor, and looked to be in serious pain. The Warriors coaching staff whisked Klay off to the locker room to be evaluated.

The All-Star wasn’t off the court for long, and got back into the game at the start of the second quarter. Following his team’s thrilling overtime win, Thompson explained that he expects to play Sunday.

“I’ve got a sore ligament,” Thompson told reporters. “I’m happy it’s just a muscle that got strained a little bit. No damage. The X-rays were negative so I’m happy about that.

“I’m just looking forward to getting 100 percent these next couple days. Because I’m not missing Sunday.”

That’s good news for the Warriors, who appear to have their hands full with a Cleveland team led by a cyborg playing the best basketball of his career in his 15th season in the NBA. Game 2 between the Warriors and Cavaliers is set for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
