McCutchen crushes three-run homer during five-run rally

SAN FRANCISCO — On Sunday afternoon, Jake Arrieta had shut down the Giants until a surge of offense led to a five-run rally in the sixth inning.

The Giants had struggled offensively as Arrieta threw five scoreless innings and also posted the only run of the game from a solo homer. However, the Giants started to chip away in the sixth inning, and it looked like this:

Gorkys Hernandez single. Alen Hanson single. Joe Panik RBI single. Buster Posey RBI single. Andrew McCutchen three-run HR

In the month of May, Arrieta had only allowed three runs with a .090 ERA. San Francisco’s five-run rally on Sunday not only broke Arrieta’s streak of 34 innings without allowing a homer, but also broke McCutchen’s streak of 159 at bats without a homer. McCutchen and Posey have both struggled against Arrieta, posting .226 and .056 batting averages, respectively.

The Giants face the Diamondbacks tomorrow at AT&T Park with a 7:15 start.
