Kerr downplays David West’s comments about Warriors’ issues behind the scenes

Warriors center David West made some eyebrow-raising comments in the locker room during Golden State’s postgame championship celebration on Friday night.

The comments were a surprise to many, including those who cover the team closely, who seemed to have very little idea what West could be referring to.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked about West’s quote on Monday, and downplayed the idea that anything crazy was going on behind the scenes. Kerr instead pointed to the collective toll that chasing a title for the fourth straight season had on the group.

“I don’t know if anything would really blow your mind but it was a difficult season and there were lots of moments where it became more difficult,” Kerr said. “But I didn’t think it was anything unusual given the state of our team and what we’ve been through and the length of this journey. Nothing to me was that shocking, but we went through some stuff.

“For sure this was the toughest of the four, mainly because of the cumulative effect of doing this four years in a row, getting to the Finals four years in a row, it’s just difficult. It felt to me like the whole year we were just trying to get to the playoffs and that’s not a very healthy way to do it, but we didn’t have much choice. It’s just human nature and a lot of injuries, a lot of wear and tear.”
