Mike Krukow explains why Posey missed two games in Los Angeles

Buster Posey sat for two of the three games during the Giants’ weekend series vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Bruce Bochy saying on Sunday that the catcher needed “a break.”

Posey doesn’t have an official injury — just general soreness — and with a strong offensive catcher in Nick Hundley also available, Bochy didn’t seem interested in pushing the five-time All-Star.

“You’re asking for injuries if you grind these guys too much,” Bochy told Henry Schulman.

Mike Krukow joined Murph & Mac on Monday and said that Posey having to catch Thursday’s 16-inning game in Miami might have messed him up a bit.

“Well the Posey situation I think catching 16 innings in a day game after a night game that’s what set him back,” Krukow said. “That’s really what the reason was as to why he didn’t play two of the three games in LA. I’m not really concerned about it.”

Brian Murphy asked Kruk if Posey will be banged up all year.

“That’s kind’ve the position, there’s always something that’s hurting, whether it be your hip, or your hand, or your thumb, or your arm, or your shoulder, there’s always a spot that’s hot and that’s just part of the position. I think it sets a guy back when the foundation is dinged, and for Posey the foundation has been his hip. If you have an ankle, leg, knee, or hip where you can’t use your weight in your swing, I mean that is something you’ll have to watch closely. So he’s had a lot of at-bats where he hasn’t used his lower body.

“I mean he’s hitting .300, and a lot of it has been with handy-type hits going the opposite way, which is part of the genius of him at the plate is he can still beat you without using his lower body. For him to have the production to drive in runs, to hit balls out of the ballpark, to hit doubles, he’s going to have to have his lower body, and that is definitely something they’re going to be watching closely.”

Posey has sat out 14 games so far this season, and is hitting .286/.359/.414 in 58 games.
