Bochy responds to Brinson plunk: ‘Were they throwing at Longoria?’

SAN FRANCISCO — It appears the contentiousness in the Giants’ 6-3 win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday night may have spanned beyond this week.

Last Thursday, during a previous series in Miami, Marlins pitcher Dan Straily hit Giants third baseman Evan Longoria in the hand with a fastball. Longoria fractured his left hand, sidelining him for 6-8 weeks.

Fast forward to Tuesday, and Straily beaned Giants catcher Buster Posey a half-inning after Lewis Brinson was plunked. Straily and Marlins manager Don Mattingly were both ejected. Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow said Mattingly told Posey, “you’re next” as he argued the warning issued to both teams after Brinson was beaned.

“He was upset at the warning and said something about, ‘Well not tonight, tomorrow,’ or whatever. But I guess they thought they had to do something,” Bochy said. “You get a little fuzzy math going on with (Longoria) on the D.L. for eight weeks.”

The events of Tuesday night juxtaposed with those in Monday night’s game, a 5-4 Marlins win. Hunter Strickland threw up and in to Brinson in the first pitch of his ninth-inning at-bat. Three pitches later, he scorched a single to erase the Giants’ lead, tying the game at 4-4. In the process, Brinson tossed his bat and yelled in Strickland’s direction. The two chirped at each other as Strickland exited the game later that inning.

After Tuesday’s game, when Bochy was asked to respond to Posey being hit, he circled back to last Thursday.

“My response I guess would be were they throwing at Longoria?” Bochy said. “(Kelby Tomlinson) got hit in the back last night, so that’s my response. Were they throwing at him? These things you don’t know.”
