Giants taking wait-and-see approach with Hanson’s injury

SAN FRANCISCO — Alen Hanson left Wednesday’s Giants game against the Miami Marlins with a left knee contusion after and had to be helped off the field in the first inning after hitting a foul ball off the knee.

The Giants now have a decision to make: place Hanson on the disabled list, or keep him on the active roster. With the severity of the injury still somewhat unknown, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the team will take a wait-and-see approach with regard to Hanson’s status in future games, as well as how the injury will affect the composition of the team’s roster.

“Yeah, we’ll wait,” Bochy said. “You know, we definitely will wait and make that move. You know, we haven’t done anything yet, and tomorrow we’ll get some more info on Hanson to see where he’s at. But I just talked to (Giants head trainer) Dave Groeschner; he says (Hanson)’s going to be really sore tomorrow.”

The decision could affect the fate of Kelby Tomlinson, who was called up to San Francisco to replace Brandon Crawford after Crawford went on paternity leave. Bochy said before Wednesday’s game that Crawford would return Thursday against the San Diego Padres.

If Hanson has to go on the disabled list, Tomlinson would likely stay with the team, while Crawford would take Hanson’s spot on the 25-man roster. If Hanson will not need 10 days off, Tomlinson will likely be sent back down.
