Holland was ‘pretty upset’ that Marlins hit Posey near head

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants defeated the Miami Marlins 6-5 Wednesday in a game that featured wild twists and turns, but perhaps not the ones some expected.

After Tuesday’s game between the two teams, which featured a pair of suspicious hit-by-pitches and the ejections of Marlins manager Don Mattingly and starting pitcher Dan Straily, it seemed plausible that more bad blood could be brewing for Wednesday’s contest.

Giants starter Derek Holland, the first man to toe the rubber Wednesday, said Straily’s pitch that plunked Buster Posey near his head irked him.

“The only thing that I’d say I was pretty upset about was, you know, if you’re going to hit somebody, the way that they did it, I didn’t like that,” Holland said. “I mean, they were a little too close to Buster’s head. Obviously, I probably would have done something to them if that would have been the case. But I gotta make sure I go up there and do my job and keep the momentum on our side, cause we gotta win these games.”

Nevertheless, even as the first man to toe the rubber for a potentially contentious series rubber match, Holland said he went out with the mindset that he wouldn’t let the incidents from Tuesday’s game affect him, even if it meant pitching inside.

“I mean, I’m gonna pitch my game,” Holland said. “You know, I’m gonna go up there and do my part. You know, obviously everybody knows I’m going to pitch inside, so I’m not going to let that be a factor.”
