Straily, Mattingly suspended for incidents vs. Giants

Marlins pitcher Dan Straily has been suspended five games (one start), and Marlins manager Don Mattingly has been suspended one game, for hitting Buster Posey with a pitch in Tuesday’s game vs. the Giants. Straily will appeal his suspension according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Mattingly will not serve his until after Straily returns.

No members of the Giants have been suspended for their involvement.

Where this silliness all started depends on who you believe. Giants manager Bruce Bochy implied that everything began on June 14, when Straily’s pitch hit Evan Longoria on the hand, breaking his left pinkie and knocking him out for 6-8 weeks. Two days later, Brinson apparently irked the Giants by celebrating a game-tying RBI a little too demonstrably.

Cut to Monday, when Giants closer Hunter Strickland elected to buzz Brinson with a fastball by his face on the first pitch of his ninth inning at-bat. Brinson responded with an RBI double, and had some words for Strickland as he ran up the first baseline, and again when Strickland exited the game.

On Tuesday, Giants starter Derek Rodriguez plunked Brinson on the first pitch of his first at-bat, leading to warnings being issued to both dugouts. Straily responded by hitting Posey, leading to both his and Mattingly’s ejections.
