If you ever want an example of why baseball players wear cups the St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Tommy Pham would probably show you this clip.
In the top of the third inning Giants starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija on the first pitch threw Pham a 76mph knuckle curve that Pham fouled into the dirt. Unfortunately for Pham the ball fouled into the dirt and right into – well – his crotch. Ball three. The game paused for a movement as Pham collected himself and the Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and their trainer went to check on him.
While most seemed concerned Pham’s teammate, and Cardinals first baseman, José Martínez was doubled over with laughter in the on-deck circle.
Pham stayed in the at bat but after six pitches he struck out swinging to end the inning. He also continued to play the rest of the game.
