SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The San Francisco Giants have announced today that they have traded right-handed pitcher Cory Gearrin, outfielder Austin Jackson and minor league right-handed pitcher Jason Bahr to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Gearrin, who has spent the past four seasons in a Giants uniform, has posted a 1-1 record with a 4.20 ERA (14er, 30.0ip) and a .275 opponents average against over 35 relief appearances this year.
The 32-year-old native of Chattanooga, TN was originally signed by the Giants as a minor league free agent on November 26, 2014 and spent the last four seasons with San Francisco, going 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 166 relief outings. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2007 draft and spent his first eight professional seasons within the Braves’ system before joining the Giants in 2014. The seven-year big league veteran has compiled a record of 11-9 with a 3.57 ERA in 243 relief appearances with the Braves (2011-13) and Giants (2015-18).
Jackson, who was signed by the Giants as a free agent this past offseason, has hit .242 (36-for-149) with eight doubles and 13 RBI in 59 games for San Francisco. The 31-year-old Denton, Texas native has made just six starts in the Giants’ last 42 games, beginning May 23.
The nine-year Major League veteran has also spent time with the Detroit Tigers (2010-14), Seattle Mariners (2014-15), Chicago Cubs (2015), Chicago White Sox (2016) and Cleveland Indians (2017), batting a career .274 with 209 doubles, 52 triples, 62 home runs and 362 RBI in 1,058 Major League games. The Denton, Texas native won the American League Wilson Defensive Player award in 2012 and 2013. He led the A.L. in triples with Detroit in 2011 (11) and 2012 (10) and was the A.L. Rookie of the Year runner-up to Neftali Feliz in 2010.
Bahr is in his second professional season after being selected by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. The 23-year-old right-hander has gone 8-4 with a 2.55 ERA (24er, 84.2ip) in 16 starts between Class A Augusta (6-4, 2.75 ERA in 13 starts) and Class A Advanced San Jose (2-0, 1.69 ERA in three starts) this season, registering 103 strikeouts in 84.2 innings.
With today’s trade, the Giants have purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Ray Black (#62) and outfielder Steven Duggar (#6). Both players will be available for today’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and both will be seeking to make their Major League debuts.
