Pablo gives Giants lead with 3-run homer

SAN FRANCISCO — With Pablo Sandoval at the plate in the fifth inning and the Giants trailing 4-3, the day had so far been one of missed opportunities for the home team. A bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the third yielded no runs, and Madison Bumgarner had underachieved, surrendering all four runs on the Cardinals’ half of the scoreboard.

Sandoval had been one of the hitters who had failed to convert in the third. But with two on in the fifth, he would not fail again.

The Giants’ third baseman launched a three-run home run into the right-field arcade that splashed into McCovey Cove on a bounce and gave the Giants a 6-4 lead. It was his eighth home run of the season and increased his RBI count to 32. The homer occurred after Sandoval made an impressive diving stop and looked to have potentially injured his left (glove) hand, but remained in the game.
