Alen Hanson scores from first base after errant pickoff attempt

They say speed kills, and the Cubs are getting the chance to learn that lesson firsthand, all thanks to Alen Hanson.

At the bottom of the fifth inning the San Francisco Giants found themselves down one run to the visiting Chicago Cubs, who scored on a fielders choice in the third inning. The inning started with Pablo Sandoval reaching base on an error by Anthony Rizzo. The next batter was Alen Hansen, who took Sandoval’s place on first after hitting into a fielders choice of his own.

Obviously worried about the speed on first, Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks attempted to pick off Hansen at first. Bad move.

The ball bounced behind a diving Hansen, who hopped up and immediately headed towards second. Second baseman Javier Baez was the first Cub to reach the ball, and seemed to be in no big hurry getting it back to the infield. By the time the ball left his hand, Hansen had already rounded third and was heading for home.

Hansen was able to slip under the tag of Willson Contreras and tie the game 1-1, scoring his 26th run of the season.
