As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com is reporting that the San Francisco Giants are high on Yankees pitching prospect Albert Abreu.

Via Kuty:

The Giants got a look not long ago at the lower levels of the Yankees’ farm system and were impressed with right-handed pitcher Albert Abreu, a source with knowledge of San Francisco’s personnel decisions told NJ Advance Media.

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.

“If you squint hard,” the person said, there are shades of Yankees ace and two-time All-Star Luis Severino in Abreu, but control issues are a concern.

Abreu, 22, is the No. 3 ranked prospect in the Yankees’ system, and the 60th ranked prospect in the MLB according to MLB.com. A native of the Dominican Republic, Abreu has spent 2018 with the Yankees’ Advanced A affiliate in Florida, posting a 4.28 ERA in 10 starts. Abreu is a flame thrower who can hit 100 MPH with his fastball, and has struck out 9.7 batters per nine innings this season.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is looking to add starting pitching before the deadline, and according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Giants have informed the Yankees that struggling starter Jeff Samardzija is available.
