Chase d’Arnaud leaves game after fouling ball off knee

Chase d’Arnaud has been the Giants’ utility man this year, filling in for players at first, second, third and nearly at catcher. He has been a constant over the last few weeks while players like Brandon Belt, Pablo Sandoval, Jeff Samardzija and Johnny Cueto have dealt with injuries.

On Tuesday afternoon, d’Arnaud suffered his own injury. On the second pitch of his second at-bat, d’Arnaud fouled a ball hard off his left knee. This came after a crucial single in second inning when he drove in the first run of the game to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

D’Arnaud immediately fell to the ground and looked to be in serious pain. He rested on the ground for roughly half a minute before manager Bruce Bochy and a member of the Giants’ training staff came out to home plate to examine d’Arnaud. After testing out his knee and wincing in pain, d’Arnaud left the game and headed into the dugout with a left knee contusion.

He was replaced by Alen Hanson, who struck out after taking over the at-bat with an 0-2 count. The strikeout was charged to d’Arnaud.
