Barry Bonds enters AT&T Park to standing ovation before number retirement

It’s no secret that the Giants rarely retire numbers. The franchise has retired just 10 numbers and the San Francisco Giants have retired just seven. So when they retired Barry Bonds’s number, they made sure to bring all the stars they could gather.

Five of the team’s players with retired numbers were there – Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Orlando Cepeda and Gaylord Perry. Mays, Bonds’s godfather, received the loudest and longest cheers of all.

But then, of course, came Bonds. And on a day that he will likely never forget, Bonds received an ovation that exceeded his godfather’s. He walked in with a smile smattered across his face, donning a suit and shades. He walked in, followed by a camera crew every step of the way, walking down from center field through the infield, and finally to his seat with his family.

The crowd erupted once he stepped onto the field, and it was only moments before chants of “Barry, Barry,” erupted.
