Derek Holland credits hitting, defense, bowel movements for win

Derek Holland is not a regular baseball player. But his bowel movements are. At least that’s the word from Holland himself, who donned an “I POOPED TODAY” t-shirt following a 13-10 Giants win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Holland pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, but also had a hit and later scored a run.

In true Holland fashion, he (jokingly) credited the win to his bowel movements.

“Yes, I pooped today,” Holland said. “If I didn’t do that, who knows what would’ve happened. I would’ve been constipated out there.”

But it’s also like Holland to give high praise to his teammates. “Dutch,” who said he was frustrated with some of his mistakes in a generally good start, credited the defensive support behind him.

“Hanson’s diving play looked like it was in slow motion, but those guys are laying out, that’s what I like to see,” Holland said. “And I know they’re giving everything they got every time out there. McCutchen laid out, I know he didn’t get it, but the effort is what matters most. Those guys were battling, knowing that each one of these games from here on out, we have to win.”

Holland also picked up an infield single himself in the third inning, which contributed to a hitting performance in which every Giants starter had a hit.

“Wheels, baby, beat it out,” Holland said. “As a pitcher, I want to try and do everything I can. I’ve been working with (hitting coach Alonzo Powell) out there, trying to get everything so I can be a little bit of a threat when I’m up at the plate. I shouldn’t say a threat, but I should be able to be a part of it.”

Holland also praised the offense and said the Giants will need to continue the momentum moving forward.

“The offense, they were huge today, they picked us up big time,” Holland said. “We have to go after these things and they’re giving everything they’ve got out there. I can’t say enough about what these guys are doing for us defensively, and the offense was huge today. We have to continue to use that momentum going forward.”
