SANTA CLARA — 49ers running Jerick McKinnon injured his right knee during a run play in Sunday’s training camp practice. The 49ers training staff tended to McKinnon for several minutes, and he eventually hobbled off the field holding the back of his right knee. He watched the rest of practice from the sideline. He did not appear overly concerned with the injury’s severity, slapping hands with general manager John Lynch on the sideline and later signing autographs for fans.

The 49ers announced after practice McKinnon will undergo an MRI.

McKinnon signed a four-year deal, with $11.7 million guaranteed, with the 49ers in March. He has put together a solid training camp, showing his versatility as a runner who quickly hits holes and receiver who catches balls out of the backfield and slot. His 49ers’ preseason debut was was forgettable, though, compiling three rushes for negative-four yards.

Backup running back Matt Breida suffered a separated shoulder in Thursday’s preseason opener. Kyle Shanahan said Sunday that Breida will not play throughout the rest of the preseason, but he is expected to suit up Week 1.

Raheem Mostert, Joe Williams, Jeremy McNichols, and Jeff Wilson will handle the running back duties if McKinnon misses any time.
