Reuben Foster leaves preseason game with concussion

Reuben Foster left the second quarter of San Francisco’s preseason matchup with the Indianapolis Colts after suffering a concussion.

Foster had produced two tackles, including a stop for a loss, in the 49ers’ 23-17 loss. He will almost certainly not play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, considering starters usually sit anyways. He would likely not have ample time to pass the return-to-play protocol the NFL employs in these scenarios.

Foster is suspended for the first two weeks of the regular season for violating the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies. He is eligible to return for San Francisco’s third game at Kansas City on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Foster did not start in Saturday’s game, likely a result of the 49ers coaching staff wanting to get the additional linebackers repetitions alongside each other. Rookie Fred Warner started at the middle linebacker spot and Malcolm Smith started at weak-side linebacker.
