49ers sign rookie running back, waive Chanceller James

The 49ers signed running back Ja’Quan Gardner to a three-year contract and released safety Chanceller James Tuesday morning.

James spent the 2017 season on injured reserve with a knee injury. He entered 2018 training camp competing for the backup strong safety spot behind Jaquiski Tartt and alongside rookie Marcell Harris. In Saturday’s 23-17 preseason loss, the 49ers moved cornerback Tyvis Powell to strong safety, forecasting James’ diminishing role.

Gardner, 23, amassed 5,495 rushing yards and 72 touchdowns in 42 games with Humboldt State. He added 81 catches for 767 receiving yards and four touchdowns throughout his career. He produced 1,534 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior in 2017.

The 49ers have bolstered their running back room in recent weeks. They added veteran Alfred Morris two weeks ago after Joe Williams suffered a fractured rib, which originally was expected to sideline him until at least Week 1 of the regular season. Kyle Shanahan recently hinted that Williams could potentially play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Gardner, who will wear No. 38, will compete alongside Morris, Raheem Mostert, Jeremy McNichols, and rookie Jeff Wilson.
