Bochy gives update on Buster Posey’s hip surgery

Buster Posey will be back with the Giants soon, just not as an active player. According to manager Bruce Bochy, Posey and Dave Groeschner, the team’s director of athletic training who was with Posey during and after surgery, will return to the team on Thursday.

Bochy said Posey had a tear in his labrum that Dr. Phillipon repaired during the surgery in Vail, Colorado.

“They were really pleased with how it went,” Bochy said.

Bochy said he hasn’t talked to Posey following the conclusion of yesterday’s surgery on the phone, but that he texted with him.

“We texted,” Bochy said. “Sometimes you know, you’re not in the mood to talk, so I didn’t. He’s doing well.”

While Bochy added that he wasn’t sure what Posey’s rehab will entail, he said he’ll be active again soon after surgery.

“I don’t know what all he’s doing, but I know it’s something where they get you moving right away,” Bochy said.

In other injury news, Jeff Samardzija will receive a second opinion on his right shoulder tomorrow. The Shark has been on the 10-day disabled list since July 15 with right shoulder inflammation. He’s suffered setbacks in his rehab despite a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in the shoulder. Bochy said the second opinion will be given by Dr. Tim McAdams at Stanford.
