Former 49ers edge rusher Elvis Dumervil announced his retirement from the NFL after 12 seasons, he wrote in a statement Thursday morning.

Dumervil led the 49ers with 6.5 sacks in 2017, his lone season with the 49ers. The 49ers declined to pick up his $3.5 million option this offseason, making him a free agent.

“My body still feels great, and I know I can still help a team win,” Dumervil wrote. “I will miss being on the field, particularly on Sundays. But I also have a wife and two young children who need me and a real estate business that I can now turn my attention to full-time.”

Kyle Shanahan had not ruled out bringing Dumervil back.

“Elvis is a guy I have a lot of confidence in,” Shanahan said last week. “He did a great job for us last year. If we felt that was the right opportunity at the end of this, Elvis is a guy John (Lynch) and I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to.”

Dumervil enjoyed five Pro Bowl seasons and was named a first-team All-Pro twice. He led the NFL with 17 sacks in 2009 with the Denver Broncos, where he played six seasons. He missed all of the 2010 season with a torn pectoral muscle. He spent four years with the Baltimore Ravens, earning two more Pro Bowl nods.

The last season of Dumervil’s career was spent with the 49ers. He earned his 100th career sack in San Francisco’s Week 4 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. His 105.5 career sacks are the 26th-most of all-time.

“Football was certainly a huge part of my life but it wasn’t my entire life,” Dumervil wrote. “I look forward to my next chapter with no regrets.”
