Nike releases Kaepernick ad to run during NFL opener

After causing a stir on social media Monday with an advertisement featuring former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Nike doubled-down on Wednesday, when Kaepernick tweeted out a two-minute Nike commercial voiced by himself that will reportedly air during the NFL opener on Thursday night.

“Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Kaepernick wrote on Twitter. The ad also features NBA star LeBron James, tennis champion Serena Williams, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., marathoner Eliud Kipchoge and skateboarder Lacey Baker, and inspirational athletes such as NFL linebacker Shaquem Griffin, wheelchair basketball player Megan Blunk, boxer Zeina Nassar and legless wrestler Isaiah Bird.

A polarizing figure since deciding not to stand for the national anthem to protest racial injustice in 2016, Kaepernick remains a free agent almost two years later, and is currently in the process of suing the NFL’s owners for collusion. Nike recently signed a 10-year deal to remain the official apparel supplier of the league. Kaepernick has been signed with Nike since 2011, though the company has kept quiet that he would be involved in a future campaign, according to ESPN.
