SANTA CLARA — On the heels of Saturday’s news that the Cleveland Browns are looking to trade or release wide receiver Josh Gordon by Monday, 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday that the team has made a call about Gordon and is doing its due diligence.

Early Sunday morning, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Gordon, though he has no say in the matter, would prefer to be traded to either the 49ers or Cowboys. The Browns are looking to trade Gordon out of the AFC per Schefter.

Gordon, 27, is scheduled to make just $790K this season before becoming a restricted free agent next offseason. Since his breakout sophomore season in 2013 when he posted 1,646 receiving yards and nine touchdowns with the Browns, Gordon has played in just 11 of a possible 65 games. Gordon missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Kyle Shanahan was Gordon’s offensive coordinator in Cleveland during the 2014 season, in which Gordon appeared in just five games before being suspended for a drunk driving incident.

After the news broke of his impending release, Gordon posted a thank you message to Cleveland on Instagram, ending it with “Anybody need a deep threat WR??”
