SANTA CLARA — Linebacker Malcolm Smith has not played a regular season with the 49ers since they signed him prior to the 2017 season. That won’t change in Sunday’s home opener.
Smith headlines the list of six 49ers inactives ahead of their Week-2 matchup against the visiting Detroit Lions. The following 49ers players will not play: Smith, Marquise Goodwin, Erik Magnuson, Matt Tobin, Joshua Garnett, Jullian Taylor, and Shon Coleman.
Right guard Mike Person, who suffered a foot injury and did not return in last Sunday’s loss, is active. Garnett also suffered a foot injury in that game, which the 49ers later diagnosed as a dislocated toe. He will not play Sunday.
As for the Detroit Lions, their inactives are Ezekiel Ansah, Hakeem Valles, Brandon Powell, TJ Lang, Jamil Demby, and Ameer Abdullah. Ansah, a 2015 Pro Bowl defensive end, was reportedly “optimistic” he would play Sunday. He left Detroit’s season opener with a shoulder injury.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
