If you’re a 49ers fan, you just read the headline you were hoping you wouldn’t see today. The team has confirmed the worst: Jimmy Garoppolo did indeed tear his ACL on his left knee after making a cut against the Chiefs this past Sunday.

From the team:

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that QB Jimmy Garoppolo underwent an MRI this morning and it has been determined that he has suffered a torn left ACL. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will address the injury later today at 4:00 pm PT in the auditorium at Levi’s Stadium.

In the extreme near-term, C.J. Beathard will likely resume his role as the 49ers starter, one he gave up when Garoppolo arrived in Santa Clara late last year. Beathard started five games for San Francisco in 2017, compiling a record of 1-4 during that time.

Looking further ahead than that, expect the team to bring in another quarterback. Jordan Schultz is already reporting the team will bring in Tom Savage for a workout.
