Colin Kaepernick has filed to trademark a black and white image of his head and hair.
As first reported by ESPN, the application’s “intent is to use the image on everything from shampoo and hairspray to jewelry and lampshades.” The image could also be used in “providing classes, workshops, seminars and camps in the field of self empowerment and awareness to properly interact with law enforcement,” along with “production of television shows and films.”

In the final year of his tenure as the starting 49ers quarterback in 2016, Kaepernick became the first player to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and social inequality. The movement swept the NFL, particularly last year.
Kaepernick has not played in an NFL game since 2016, but he became the poster child of the movement and has inspired fellow athletes to speak out on racial issues in America. He filed a collusion grievance against the NFL last year. Last month, Nike made Kaepernick the face of its “Just Do It” campaign. He narrated Nike’s two-minute commercial, then appeared about midway through, saying, “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”
