The San Francisco Giants have been denied permission to speak with Brewers general manager David Stearns by Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The Giants were reportedly interested in talking to Stearns about becoming their president of baseball operations. Stearns is under contract in Milwaukee for at least one more year.

Stearns, 33, is the currently the youngest general manager in baseball, and was hired as the Brewers’ GM in 2015 at just 30 years old. Under Stearns, the Brewers have gone from a 68-win team in 2015, to a 98-win team this season, and recently clinched a spot in the NLCS after sweeping the Rockies in the first round of the playoffs. The Brewers underwent a major overhaul under Stearns, who fired five of the team’s seven coaches, and replaced half of the team’s 40-man roster in his first season as GM.
Interestingly, the report appears to leave the possibility open that the Giants will not bring in a new general manager, but rather put Brian Sabean (or someone elses) in that role and instead hire a new president of baseball ops., the role Sabean has served in since 2015.
