After working him out in the week following Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending ACL injury, the 49ers are planning on signing former Texans and Saints quarterback Tom Savage when the “time is right,” according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Both Savage and Matt Simms reportedly caught the 49ers’ eye during the workout. Savage, 28, has more experience than Simms and started seven games for Houston last season. Savage would join the team as the No. 3 quarterback behind C.J. Beathard and backup Nick Mullens.
Savage was with the Texans in 2014, 2016, and 2017, when he played a combined 13 games with nine starts. He completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 2,000 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. Savage started the 2018 season on the Saints roster, but was released on September 1 after Teddy Bridgewater was named the backup quarterback.
