Green after Warriors allow 42 free throws: ‘Some of the fouls we have are just dumb as hell’

After the Warriors lost their first game of the season 100-98 to the Denver Nuggets, Draymond Green discussed a performance that was largely plagued by sloppy play and fouls. As a team, the Warriors committed 29 fouls to the Nuggets’ 22, and allowed 42 free throws compared to the 24 they shot.

While Green acknowledged that some of the fouls called against the Warriors were “questionable,” like the one called on Klay Thompson trying to get over a screen in the fourth quarter, he placed the onus of avoiding foul calls on the Warriors.

“Some of the fouls we have are just dumb as hell,” Green said. “Like, we’re in the bonus, six, seven, eight minutes to go in every quarter and we’re still fouling. Some of them are a bit questionable and then some of them are just on us. It’s ridiculous. We’ve gotta be smarter.”

Green, the Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and a member of the All-NBA Defensive first team from 2015-17 and second team in 2018, probably knows about as much as any NBA player about how to play defense properly. He continued to say the team can’t expect to always get the calls from officials.

“We can’t sit there and act like every foul called on us is wrong,” Green said. “The officials are going to get some wrong. That’s just the nature of the beast, they’re human, that’s the game we play. To clean that up, to combat that, we can’t have the stupid ones… How do you combat that? Clean up our defense, stop using our hands as much. Stop reaching. And right now, we’re not doing a good job of that.”
