The 49ers have re-signed quarterback Tom Savage just two days after waiving him, according to Pro Football Talk.

Kyle Shanahan confirmed this news during a press conference Monday afternoon.

Savage was signed early last week to give the 49ers a third quarterback option. With Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season, C.J. Beathard has assumed the starting responsibilities, and Nick Mullens has taken the backup role. Shanahan has made it clear the Savage is the third-stringer as of now.

The 49ers waived Savage Saturday as part of a short-term series of moves, promoting safety/cornerback Tyvis Powell from the practice squad. Savage was not needed in San Francisco’s 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams because the 49ers typically do not activate more than two quarterbacks on game days.

Shanahan announced the 49ers are placing free safety Adrian Colbert on injured reserve after suffering a high ankle sprain Sunday. Shanahan said it is unlikely Colbert will return this season. The move cleared a path for Savage’s return.

Shanahan said he liked Savage coming out of Rutgers. The Houston Texans drafted Savage in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He appeared in 13 games and nine starts with a career 2-7 record. He signed with the New Orleans Saints back in March and was released during the round of cuts preceding the regular season opener.
