Nick Mullens recounts what Brett Favre told him during postgame call

Nick Mullens shares a connection with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Both Mullens and future Hall of Famer Brett Favre were record breaking quarterbacks at the University of Southern Mississippi. Though Favre finished his career with the Golden Eagles as the school’s all-time passing leader, Mullens easily surpassed that mark during his excellent college career.

Mullens also looked like Favre in his NFL debut on Thursday, owning the Raiders with a 262 yard, three touchdown, zero interception performance.

Shortly after Mullens was officially named the starter, he received an encouraging text from Favre before the game. Afterwards, Mullens received a call.

“It was pretty cool, definitely an honor,” Mullens said. “It’s cool to see Southern Miss alumni you know stay in tune with the program and support each other so I’m definitely appreciative of that, and definitely have the most respect for Brett.

“He just told me how proud of me he was. He sent me a message before the game saying ‘no pressure, just be yourself’ and that’s what I try to do before the game, and during the game, and so just try to stay calm out there and lead the offense and obviously we’ve got some veterans on the O-line, so it’s just a very collective effort.”
