Former 49er and longtime Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne has been charged with aggravated sexual assault by Australian police, according to the BBC.

Via BBC Sport:

“The 30-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Hunter Valley, north of Sydney, on 30 September.

New South Wales Police said he has been bailed pending a court appearance in Burwood on 10 December.

Police said they launched an investigation after receiving reports a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man she met on social media.”

Hayne had a brief but high profile stint with the 49ers in 2015. Hayne made the team’s 53-man roster primarily as a kick and punt returner, but was waived on October 31st, before re-signing with the team’s practice squad. Hayne announced his retirement from the NFL that offseason. Hayne finished his NFL career with 155 yards from scrimmage in eight games.

In 2009 and 2014 Hayne was named the National Rugby League’s Player of the Year.

This is the second time Hayne has been accused of sexual assault in the last three years. In 2015, Hayne was accused of sexual assault in America during his time with the 49ers. Police investigated the incident but decided not to charge Hayne.
