One day after the 49ers officially released Reuben Foster, the Washington Redskins claimed him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Foster was eligible to be claimed within the 24-hour waiver window. The 49ers announced they would release Foster about four hours before Sunday’s game, but the transaction did not officially go through until 1 p.m. Monday.

Foster was arrested for alleged domestic violence Friday night at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay after his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, called the Tampa police and said Foster had hit her. The 49ers acted swiftly, releasing Foster the next morning, about nine hours after his arrest. Ennis was the same accuser in the domestic violence case looming over Foster for about four months earlier this year. The fact that he met with Ennis, at the team hotel, one night before a game, told Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, and the 49ers front office everything they needed to know.

There was no way of telling what would happen after Foster was released, considering he has been arrested three times (twice for domestic violence and once for marijuana possession) this year. He served a two-game suspension to start the 2018 season.

But he now has a new home with the Redskins, which claimed Foster after 17 teams ahead of them in the waiver order did not. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the Redskins were the only team to put in a waiver claim for Foster.

Foster has been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, deeming him ineligible for the active list until the exemption is lifted.
