Russell Wilson threw Fred Warner’s shoe, leading to Kyle Shanahan’s outburst

Kyle Shanahan reached his tipping point late in the third quarter of San Francisco’s 43-16 loss at Seattle Sunday. Shanahan laid into the referee and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The instigator of Shanahan’s outburst? Russell Wilson.

One play earlier, Fred Warner lost his shoe. Wilson picked up the shoe and threw it behind the line of scrimmage, leaving Warner scrambling to retrieve it. The rookie linebacker scooped his shoe and ran off the field, but the Seahawks snapped the ball, and the 49ers were flagged for offsides when Elijah Lee tried entering the game for Warner.

Shanahan was upset because the ref did not stop the play clock or prevent the Seahawks from snapping the ball. Shanahan said the referee did not give him much explanation as to why the play was not stopped. That, combined with the frustrations of a 24-point deficit at the time, and Shanahan reached his boiling point.

“That’s what I was trying to figure out, especially when another guy on the opposing team threw it,” Shanahan said Monday. “I’m not saying that he did that maliciously or anything, who knows, but it was an unusual situation and it was my tipping point.”
