Kerr recalls story of Charles Barkley not knowing what ‘lethargy’ meant

OAKLAND – Most stories about Charles Barkley tend to have a funny ending, especially if Steve Kerr is the one telling those stories. This story comes from back when Kerr was a broadcaster for TNT covering a Knicks game back in their 54-win season in 2012-13.

Kerr was asked about the “monotony” of the regular season and how the Warriors could get past that in the postseason. The question sparked Kerr’s memory

“I just had a flashback to when I worked at TNT,” Kerr said. “I did a game with Charles Barkley, it was a Knicks game ironically, it was about five or six years ago. Charles and Marv Albert and I were doing a game and Marv says – this was the year the Knicks were pretty good, Carmelo was an MVP candidate, I think they won 50-plus games, a great year. And Marv said, ‘Charles, the Knicks seem to really have a strong team, but occasionally a certain lethargy sets in.’”

Barkley’s response was legendary.

“Charles goes, ‘Marv, I don’t know what lethargy means, but if it means they suck, I agree with you,’” Kerr said. “I don’t know why, that just flashed into my head. So make what you want of that.”

Kerr eventually got back to the question at hand, about how the Warriors could overcome that monotony of the season.

“Lethargy comes to mind sometimes. So I have a different definition of it than Charles, but I think there’s no question there have been times this year where we’ve been a little bit lethargic,” Kerr said. “It’s probably human nature after so many years of competing at a high level, we’ve occasionally left our foot off the gas a little bit and we’re halfway through after tonight. We have to be better, we have to be more consistent.”
