The 49ers have loosened their grip.

On Friday, the team denied quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello permission to interview for the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator vacancy. On Monday, it was reported that Scangarello will interview for the same position, according to 9News’ Mike Klis, who said John Elway and John Lynch have been in contact.

The Broncos are rounding out their coaching staff behind newly appointed head coach Vic Fangio. Scangarello has coached the 49ers quarterbacks for the past two years. He discovered Nick Mullens during the pre-draft process and oversaw his development into a quality starter this past season. Prior to working with the 49ers, Scangarello served as the offensive coordinator for small schools including Wagner, Northern Arizona, Millsaps, and UC Davis.

Scangarello is one of three 49ers assistant coaches whom teams have targeted in recent weeks. The 49ers denied the Vikings, Browns, and Packers to speak with receivers coach Mike LaFleur and the Cardinals to interview run-game coordinator Mike McDaniel.

On Sunday, the 49ers parted ways with defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina. On Friday, the team fired head athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson. And on Jan. 4, the 49ers fired head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright.
