49ers have zeroed in on new quarterbacks coach [report]

The 49ers reportedly have a new quarterbacks coach in waiting.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, the team plans to hire Shane Day to replace Rich Scangarello, who accepted the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator role fewer than two weeks ago. Scangarello served two years as the 49ers quarterbacks coach. One of his chief accomplishments was discovering Nick Mullens and playing an integral role in his development.

This isn’t Day’s first time working for the 49ers. From 2007 to 2009, Day, 44, worked as an offensive quality control coach under Mike Nolan. Day moved on to coach quarterbacks with the Chicago Bears for two seasons. From 2012 to 2013, Day coached quarterbacks at the University of Connecticut. He returned to the NFL in 2014, coaching the Washington Redskins offensive line. Day spent the past three seasons as the Miami Dolphins tight end coach.

The 49ers coaching staff has undergone consistent change in the opening month of the offseason. The team lost both Scangarello and defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley, who left to become Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator. About a week later, the 49ers hired former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods to replace Hafley. Assistant offensive line coach Adam Stenavich is now the Green Bay Packers offensive line coach.

The 49ers have also made a round of firings. The first two applied to the team’s injury issue, which saw 41 players placed on injured reserve throughout the past two seasons. First, the 49ers fired head athletic trainer Ray Wright earlier this month. One week later, they parted ways with longtime head strength and conditioning coach Jeff Ferguson. The team also fired defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina and replaced him with Kris Kocurek, who previously held that role with the Miami Dolphins.

Two 49ers assistants who have received interest around the league are passing game coordinator/receivers coach Mike LaFleur and run game coordinator Mike McDaniel. Both will seemingly remain in their roles with the 49ers, despite the Day hire. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, according to Maiocco, wanted an assistant to exclusively work with the quarterbacks.
