For the second time this week, the 49ers added a Pro Bowl receiver… to their coaching staff.

10-year NFL veteran Miles Austin will reportedly join the 49ers as an offensive quality control coach, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Austin will replace T.C. McCartney, who left the 49ers last month to become the Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach.

This will be Austin’s first NFL coaching experience. In 2016, he served as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys. He interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts receivers coach position last January.

Miles’ career was punctuated with drastic highs and lows. In his first two NFL seasons, he combined for 354 receiving yards. In the following two seasons, he compiled 2,361 yards and 18 touchdowns en route to back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances. Austin regressed after that, with exception to one more 943-yard season. He played eight years with the Cowboys, one with the Browns, and one with the Eagles. He stopped playing after the 2015 season.

On Tuesday, the 49ers reportedly agreed to bring on five-time Pro Bowl receiver Wes Welker as their new receivers coach. The team is adding accomplished veterans to mentor a 49ers receiving corps that lacked production in 2018. Kendrick Bourne led the group with 487 yards, which ranked 97th in the league.
