Scottsdale, AZ — The San Francisco Giants announced today that they have claimed infielder Hanser Alberto off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Alberto appeared in 13 games with the Texas Rangers in 2018 and hit .185. The utility infielder made seven starts (three at second base, three at shortstop and one at third base). He spent the majority of last season with triple-A Round Rock and was named the team’s MVP. Over his final 47 games with Round Rock, he hit .367 (65-for-177) with a .904 OPS.

The 26-year-old also hit .322 (55-for-171) with nine doubles, 16 RBI and a .758 OPS in 43 games this offseason for Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League. Over nine career minor league seasons, he’s posted a .287 average with 86 stolen bases in 730 games.

To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Jake Barrett was designated for assignment.
