Giants option two players, re-assign four non-roster invitees

The Giants released the following roster update on Friday afternoon:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The San Francisco Giants optioned right-handed pitchers Merandy González and Logan Webb, the club announced today. The Giants also reassigned outfielder John Andreoli, right-handed pitcher Jandel Gustave, infielder Ryan Howard and catcher Hamlet Marte to their minor league camp.

The Giants now have 58 players in camp plus one on the 60-day injured list.

The five moves are the first of what will be a handful of camp trims during spring training. Gonzalez, 23, was acquired by the Giants off waivers this offseason from the Marlins. He made eight appearances for Miami last year posting a 5.73 ERA. Webb, 22, was a fourth-round pick by the Giants in 2014, and posted a 2.41 ERA in 27 appearances (26 starts) while splitting time between Single and Double A.

Andreoli, 28, was claimed off waivers from the Rangers. He played in 26 games for the Mariners and Orioles last season posting a slash line of .230/.284/.262. Howard, 24, was a fifth round pick in 2016 and posted a slash line of .273/.336/.396 with Double-A Richmond. Marte, 25, posted a slash line of .342/.477/.820 with the Dodgers Single and Double-A affiliates last year.
