SAN FRANCISCO – New San Francisco Giants outfielder Kevin Pillar is certainly re-earning his nickname “Superman” for his new ball club by The Bay.
In a tight affair between the Giants and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays, starting pitcher Jeff Samardzjia did his best to keep the game close through five, clinging to a 2-1 lead. The bases were loaded in the fifth inning after singles by Daniel Robertson, Willy Adames, and Austin Meadows, and when the margin for error was at it’s slimmest, Kevin Pillar delivered in a big way.
Pillar fully extended in right-center field to force Robertson to tag up and hold Adames and Meadows, who represented potential runs ripe to score if Pillar had missed.
“That could have been a bag clearing double,” Mike Krukow said after the incredible show of defense.
