Following Saturday’s 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, a celebration broke out in the Giants clubhouse. In a game where rookies Connor Joe and Travis Bergen each recorded career firsts, the Giants came together and celebrated Joe’s first career hit and Bergen’s first career win.

Newcomer Kevin Pillar was asked about the Giants clubhouse culture and what it was like celebrating his first win with the team.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Bruce Bochy was asked about the Giants clubhouse culture and what kind of role the veterans play in welcoming and accepting their young teammates.

“Yea well it’s the kind of culture you hope to create,” Bochy said. “Guys enjoy being here, they have fun playing. They enjoy celebrating the success of others, and that’s what it’s about. You’ll be a better player I think when you’re coming out every day and you’re having fun and doing what you love to do.”

Both Joe and Bergen were doused with beer, milk, and shampoo in celebration of their career firsts. Bochy was happy with the way his team came together and celebrated the two rookies.

“You also care about your teammates, and I hope that is the culture that’s been created here, and I think that shows of course with Kevin’s comments. It makes me feel good that these guys did such a good job to make Connor Joe feel really good about himself with his first hit, and Bergen.”

What makes the Giants clubhouse culture so infectious is that it’s established early on in spring training when players are getting to know each other.

“Of course, these guys have done a great job of it, and it really goes back to spring training. When we bring these minor leaguers over and they get some playing time with us over in spring training, they (the veterans) have this spirit of hospitality where they really welcome these guys. They take them under their wing and do what they can to make them feel comfortable.”

The Giants have been known for their strong clubhouse culture, it’s been a contributing factor towards their three World Series championships. In a year of uncertainty that may present many struggles, it’s important for the team to continue to maintain this culture throughout a potentially difficult season.
